New option for registering new EnhanceFitness Sites

In the future, long term, I think it will make a big difference. In the meantime it will help me to stay in a positive, hopeful frame of mind.” – EW Participant

“For people like me, the virtue of EnhanceFitness is that it has a strong social component. I have found this to be a critical advantage. January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the United States. But half of people with glaucoma don’t know they have it.

Glaucoma has no early symptoms. The only way to check for it is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but starting treatment as early as possible can help stop vision loss.

Anyone can get glaucoma, but some people are at higher risk, including people who:

  • Are over age 60
  • Are Black/African American and over age 40
  • Are Asian American
  • Are Hispanic/Latino
  • Have a family history of glaucoma

This Glaucoma Awareness Month, join the National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) in encouraging everyone at higher risk for glaucoma to get a dilated eye exam. It’s the best way to protect their vision!

Reflections on ASA RISE

Health Coaching News

Giving Thanks All Year Long—Gratitude is Good Medicine

According to the American Heart Association, “Clinical trials indicate that the practice of gratitude can have dramatic and lasting effects in a person’s life. It can lower blood pressure and improve immune function. . . . Grateful people engage in more exercise, have better dietary behaviors, are less likely to smoke and abuse alcohol and have higher rates of medication adherence.” Check out their how-to infographic and share with clients and coworkers!

At Sound Generation’s Project Enhance, we are grateful to all of our funders, partners, delivery organizations, instructors, coaches and clients for all you do everyday to strengthen your communities! THANK YOU!

Reflections on ASA RISE

On December 5th, the American Society on Aging (ASA) will announce the third cohort of fellows accepted into ASA RISE, a 20-week fellowship program for rising leaders of color in aging, already 45 alumni strong. Just two years ago, ASA RISE was still a concept and Sound Generations’ Deidre Daymon was selected as a fellow of the inaugural cohort:

“Being a part of the ASA RISE program has been a wonderful experience for me. This program recognizes the importance of addressing social injustice and has given me the courage and opportunity to not only share my own story but also to amplify the voices of older adults I have the privilege of working with. ASA RISE has also provided me with a supportive group of diverse professionals who are dedicated to making a positive impact in their respective communities. I am truly grateful for the opportunity.” – Deidre Daymon, Assistant Director of Health, Wellness and Project Enhance, Sound Generations

The November-December 2023 issue of Generations Today is dedicated to telling you The ASA RISE Story.

September “Recommended Reads” List

Reframing Aging VLOG

Welcome New EnhanceWellness Orgs!

Fall Prevention Awareness to Action: How EnhanceFitness Reduces Fall Risk and Injury

Falls are multifactorial. This means that they involve and are dependent on a number of factors and causes. EnhanceFitness (EF) addresses biological factors by increasing mobility, balance and strength through consistent appropriate exercise. EF also addresses psychosocial factors including depression, loneliness and social support through consistent motivating social interactions with other class participants and a supportive instructor. The 2015 publication Participation in Older Adult Physical Activity Programs and Risk for Falls Requiring Medical Care, Washington State, 2005-2011 looked at participation in EF to determine association with a reduced risk of falls resulting medical care and found that both consistent and intermittent participation were associated with reduced risk. It concluded by stating that “evidence-based physical activity programs, particularly EF, should be more widely disseminated into communities not only for their general effects on fitness but also for their likely benefits on prevention of fall-related health care use, an important personal and societal outcome.”

Healthy Living is Healthy Aging

In observance of September as Healthy Aging Month, Rear Admiral Paul Reed, Director of the U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), sat down with Patricia D’Antonio, Executive Director for the National Center to Reframe Aging, to discuss the myriad ways we encounter, and even perpetuate ageism in our everyday lives, and the importance of dispelling negative public perceptions of older adulthood and revisiting aging as not something that we “arrive at”, but rather a continuous process that we experience throughout our lifecycle. Give it a listen today!

“When I started, I could not sit to stand I had to use the arms of my chair to get up…This class has got me fit in my abilities to go buy groceries by myself and put them away. I can now walk three times a day and I exercise three times a week through the hybrid [EnhanceFitness] class. Everybody in the class encourages each other to continue if someone’s out. Someone follows up and there is no isolation for the members of this class…The weight loss is a bonus, but the mobility is a miracle. I can now do things that I thought I would never be able to do again. I can walk without looking at the ground. I can go upstairs step step step instead of foot step foot step foot step up the stairs. I can get up off the sofa without my hands and I can mop my whole house. Disability does not define me, thanks to EnhanceFitness.”

EnhanceFitness Spotlight: Ernestine Robinson and Charlesetta McDowell, Central Area Senior Center

We honor Ernestine Robinson and Charlesetta McDowell this month as they retire after 28 years of team-teaching EnhanceFitness!

Class participants in the WISE study, the precursor to the Lifetime Fitness program (now EnhanceFitness), they became two of the first class instructors. Their joyful Central Area Senior Center classes have always been very full with 30-40 participants and plenty of laughter. They have been visited by public health and aging leaders from around the world. Not only are Ernestine and Charlesetta excellent instructors, they are healthy lifestyle role models for all.

Thank you Ernestine, Charlesetta and Central Area Senior Center for your profound impact!

~ Every act creates a ripple with no logical end. ~

“I seldom have a class that someone doesn’t share with me how EnhanceFitness has helped them. Taking a trip with family they never dreamed possible before EF, coming off of their medication for blood pressure, their doctor calling them personally to say’“I don’t know what you’re doing, but keep it up!!’ My participants range in age from 63 to 93. They all have a story on how they have benefited from the program.”

“Tips for Teaching” EnhanceFitness to those with MCI

EnhanceFitness is featured in the US HHS Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has just released the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report: Implementation Strategies for Older Adults. EnhanceFitness at Suncoast YMCA in Florida is highlighted in the report as an outstanding example of how strategies to increase physical activity among older adults are being put into practice in communities across the United States.

The Midcourse Report and supporting materials can be found at https://health.gov/our-work/nutrition-physical-activity/physical-activity-guidelines/current-guidelines/midcourse-report.

Everyone has a role to play in helping older adults get more physical activity. Health care professionals, delivery organizations, policymakers, trainers, instructors and community members can work across all sectors to create opportunities and environments that help promote access to physical activity among older adults. Thank you for being a part of this important effort.

Thank you for all you are doing to support others in leading healthier lives!

Exercising with Arthritis

Physical Activity reduces Risk of Osteoarthritis for those with Obesity

Regular physical activity – through a combination of aerobic and strength training – can help protect against osteoarthritis by: increasing muscle strength and cardiovascular health; improving body composition and joint support; preserving muscle mass; and reducing inflammation, joint stiffness and pain.
